Board Meeting Notes 6-13-09 |
Suspends Doornink and Eliminates Rosemount from Post-Season Play
The State Board met on Saturday, June 13th in St. Cloud. One of the discussions centered on a player from Rosemount, Matt Doornink. Doornink had been discussed at the March meeting for playing with Menominee, Wisconsin during the time that he was a signed player with the Rosemount Black Sox. Since that meeting, Doornink wrote a letter to Board member Fred Roufs outlining his playing with Menominee and Rosemount. Based on the information provided, the Board suspended Doornink and made Rosemount ineligible for post-season play on an 8-0 vote. Their roster is frozen, and no player may be drafted for any Section or State Tournament play. They may play the rest of the regular season. It is up to Section Five to determine how they want to count any game Rosemount participates in. Rosemount will have a chance to appeal this ruling at the July 18th meeting in Gaylord.
New Ruling by the State High School League
In an important ruling for MBA teams, the State High School League exempted the MBA from a rule that is in effect for other sports. Here is the rule:
A high school coach and his/her high school student athletes cannot participate on the same non-school team. For example, the assistant coach of the high school volleyball team cannot participate on a team in a community league if members of the high school team also participate on the same community team.
The policy must be applied for all coaches and student athletes, and for all sports with one exception. The policy will not be applied for baseball; high school coaches and student athletes will be allowed to participate on the same non-school team.
This policy is consistent with other MSHSL policies that have been modified to reflect the longstanding tradition of town team baseball.
This is a very important ruling for the MBA because there are many towns that have high school coaches playing for their respective amateur teams and it would have drastically affected the quality of play throughout the state.
Board member Bob Zellmann was instrumental in dealing with the high school league on this matter. This ruling came in a fax from Craig Perry of the high school league.
Other Board Business
The Board approved tournaments for Freeport (already had the tournament), Victoria 6-12-14, and Milica 6-20. They also approved a Fairfax Fun Day vs the Hanska Bullheads for July 6, 2009.
Tony Beneke from Arlington addressed the Board and stated that things are right on schedule for the State Tournament. They are pre-selling State Tournament tickets until August 16th. He also said that it looks as though there will be free shuttle service between the parks until 11:00 P.M. each tournament day.
Bidding for 2013, 2014, 2015 State Tournaments
The Board decided that bidding for the 2013, 2014 and 2015 State Tournaments would be held in June 2010. Any site interested in bidding would be required to notify the Board with the proper paperwork before the end of the 2009 State Tournament. Bidding packets would be due by the March, 2010 meeting and actual presentations and the awarding of the tournaments would be at the June, 2010 meeting. In that way, the Board felt that they would have two months to inspect potential State Tournament sites.
