Tonight (Wednesday) they are playing Chaska at Chaska and will come back and play Minnetonka again on Thursday. They are 16, 17 and 18 year olds that are the best ballplayers in the USA. Fun to watch! Click here for my story from last week which includes the remaining schedule.
Now for what you've all been waiting for. The Top Ten in Class C (according to me). There are over 225 teams in C so narrowing it down to ten is pretty hard. The records I have are approximate for some of the teams but you can get a pretty good idea of how they are doing by looking at them. Most of the teams have a website that you can access by going to "teams" on the MBA homepage. There, the teams are arranged by leagues and locality.
I'll start you off with a story. In 2004 I was watching the State Tournament in Jordan and decided that it was time to leave. The game that was being played featured Blue Earth and the Moorhead Brewers. As I was walking out, a big Blue Earth follower lamented to me, "Oh, Bill, It's just not right, it's like men playing against boys. We don't really have a chance." Well at the time Blue Earth was behind 4 or 5 to nothing. Moorhead looked like they were the team to beat for the title and I thought that Moorhead would win the game too. No one told Blue Earth that they didn't have a chance and they went on to win the game and the tournament. They also won the tournament in 2006. They will be tough again this year.
Cannon Falls is another of my top teams. It seems as though every top C team has one excellent pitcher and the Bears sure do in Keith Meyers. They play a lot of B teams and do well. On Sunday they beat Savage 4-3.
Another team that has a pitcher that impressed me during last year's tournament is Midway. I thought that Jake Lund of the Snurdbirds was as good a pitcher as I saw last year. He's back and they have some other good players too.
The St. Cloud Snappers are still winning games and rolling along. I think that they miss the teams that moved up to B in the last two years and want to join them after this year.
Isanti and Princeton lead the Eastern Minny West and Forest Lake and Champlin are tough in the other Eastern Minny League.
In the Stearns County League, Lake Henry is 12-1 and has beaten Cold Spring this year.
In the Victory Leagues: North-Ripley 11-2, East-Lastrup 10-3, West-Sobieski 12-1, and South-Opole 10-3. Their playoffs start this weekend.
Lamberton was second in the Arlington-Gaylord tourney this weekend and Owatonna won it. Owatonna has played a good schedule and is 15-6 on the year. Tate Cummins is the manager and also a fine player that came to Owatonna via the Austin Greyhounds. He knows what's going on and how to win.
So here is my Top Ten (Remember, you have to play them)
- Moorhead Brewers
- Blue Earth
- Cannon Falls
- St. Cloud Snappers
- Owatonna
- Midway
- Lake Henry
- Forest Lake
- Fergus Falls
- Isanti
